vorrei is the polite conditional of volere (“to want”), used to soften a request — Vorrei un caffè (“I would like a coffee”) instead of the blunter Voglio un caffè.

Silent at the start of a word: ho, hai, ha (verb avere), hotel, hamburger. After c/g it forces the hard sound: chiesa, ghiro.
/ɲ/: gnocchi, lasagna
Soft /ʃ/: sciare, scelta
/ʎ/: famiglia, voglio
Like Dutch “oe”, never like “ü”: tu
Always followed by “u”, unlike Spanish: qui, quo, qua, 4 quattro, 5 cinque
Both vowels are pronounced: grazie → “grazië”

lo only applies to masculine words — feminine nouns always take la (or l' before a vowel), regardless of what follows.
